Ignition interlock in Utah

A Utah court orders an ignition interlock as a condition of a DUI conviction, and the Driver License Division (DLD) runs the program by certifying the systems and licensing the providers and installers. How long you need one depends on your age at arrest and whether you have a prior DUI.

Where each company can install in Utah

You'll go back to the same company's locations for service for the whole order, so check that one is close to where you live and work before you book.

Locations as each company lists them on its own locator (Smart Start, Intoxalock, LifeSafer, Low Cost Interlock, RoadGuard), pulled Oct 2026. Some shops serve more than one company. Alcohol Detection Systems doesn't publish a locator we could read.

    If you can't afford it

If you are on probation, you can file an affidavit of indigency, and if the court finds you indigent it may waive costs or let you pay in installments. The provider covers the costs the court waives.

    The rules in Utah

    Program run by
The Utah Driver License Division (DLD) certifies interlock systems and licenses the providers and installers who work on them.7
    License you get
Your license carries an ignition interlock restriction, which makes you an interlock restricted driver. You must not drive any vehicle, including a motorcycle, without a device installed.8
    Approved providers
The DLD certified list includes Lifesafer, Smart Start, Alcolock USA, Intoxalock, LowCost Interlock, RoadGuard Interlock and Simple Interlock.9
    Help paying
If you are on probation, you can file an affidavit of indigency, and if the court finds you indigent it may waive costs or let you pay in installments. The provider covers the costs the court waives.10
    Getting it removed
If you take the device out early, your license is suspended again until a device is installed and an additional reinstatement fee is paid. The provider must electronically notify the DLD when the device is installed and when it is removed.11
    Violations
Breath violations and failing to calibrate or monitor the device on schedule (every 60 days under the statute) each add a 60-day extension for violations since May 3, 2023.6
    Camera
Devices need a camera under a rule that took effect March 12, 2024, with compliance required by October 31, 2024.12
    Driving for work
If you drive an employer-owned vehicle during your job, you may be allowed to do so without a device when your employer verifies it. If you have no vehicle, you can use the Employment Exemption Affidavit from the DLD.13
    Out-of-state license
If you are a non-resident without a vehicle in Utah, you can clear the suspension by paying the reinstatement fee and showing proof that you are licensed in your home state.14
    Medical exemption
A medical condition that affects your ability to use a device can qualify you for review, which involves spirometry and the Medical Advisory Board. If it is approved, you are not eligible for DUI Early Reinstatement.15

    Questions about interlocks in Utah

How long do you have to have an interlock in Utah?

It depends on your age when you were arrested. If you were 21 or older, the DLD page says 18 months. If you were under 21 and convicted of DUI, it says 3 years. A repeat DUI within 10 years of a prior conviction means a longer period, which the page does not put a number on.2

What happens if you take the interlock out early in Utah?

Your license is suspended again until a device is installed and you pay an additional reinstatement fee. The provider also has to electronically notify the Driver License Division when a device is installed and when it is removed, so the removal is reported to the state.11

What happens if you fail a breath test or miss a calibration in Utah?

Each violation adds 60 days to your restriction, a rule that has applied since May 3, 2023. Violations include breath violations and failing to calibrate or monitor the device, which the statute sets at every 60 days. Driving without a device after a conviction can lead to your driving privilege being revoked for 1 year.6

Can you get help paying for an interlock in Utah?

If you are on probation, you can file an affidavit of indigency with the court. When the court finds you indigent, it may waive costs or allow you to pay in installments, and the interlock provider covers the costs of any waiver the court grants.16

Can you drive a work vehicle without an interlock in Utah?

You may be able to. An employer-owned vehicle driven in the course of your job can be allowed without a device when your employer provides verification. If you have no vehicle, the DLD has an Employment Exemption Affidavit you can use instead.13

Do you need an interlock in Utah if you live in another state?

A non-resident who does not own a vehicle in Utah can clear the suspension by paying the reinstatement fee and showing proof of being licensed in their home state, so a device is not part of that path.14
