In Oregon, an interlock comes from a DUII conviction or a diversion agreement, and the DMV sets your requirement. The Oregon State Police Ignition Interlock Device Program regulates the devices, and the Oregon Health Authority runs the program that helps low-income drivers pay.

Where each company can install in Oregon

You'll go back to the same company's locations for service for the whole order, so check that one is close to where you live and work before you book.

Locations as each company lists them on its own locator (Smart Start, Intoxalock, LifeSafer, Low Cost Interlock), pulled Oct 2026. Some shops serve more than one company. Alcohol Detection Systems doesn't publish a locator we could read.

The Oregon State Police Ignition Interlock Device Program is the regulator, the DMV sets your requirement, and the Oregon Health Authority runs the indigent program. You can confirm your requirement date with the DMV.4
    License you get
You get either a hardship permit with an interlock condition or a reinstated license with an interlock requirement.5
    Approved vendors
The list includes Alcohol Detection Systems, Intoxalock, LifeSafer Ignition Interlock and Smart Start Inc. OSP does not endorse any manufacturer, service center or device.6
    Help paying
Oregon's Indigent Ignition Interlock Device Program pays for installation, monitoring and removal. It is run by the OHA together with the OSP IID Oversight Program.7
    Who qualifies
You qualify if you live in Oregon, an Oregon court ordered the interlock after a DUII, and you are enrolled in SNAP.8
    How to apply
No application is required. You schedule with LifeSafer at 800-698-8046 and show proof of SNAP.9
    Fee waivers
ORS 813.603 also lets the department waive or defer your responsibility to pay, in whole or in part, using SNAP-based indigence criteria.10
    Getting it removed
Once you finish the requirement and the DMV confirms it is lifted, you schedule removal with your interlock company. A No Negative Report or Certificate, based on a log review that normally covers the last 90 days, ends the requirement.11
    Violations
Failure to comply, tampering and circumvention count as violations, and so do any alcohol reading above 0.020 at start and failed or missed retests. The DMV is notified and your original requirement is extended.12
    Retests
The device asks for additional breath samples while you drive. After an alcohol violation you have 10 minutes to give a passing sample.13
    Camera
The device has a camera that takes still photos when you are asked for a breath sample, when you submit it and when a violation happens. It also records GPS.14
    Driving for work
You may drive an employer-owned vehicle in the course of your job without a device if your employer has been notified and you have proof.15
    Bicycle offenses
This interlock section does not apply if the offense happened while you were riding a bicycle, and electric-assist bicycles are excluded from that exception.16

    Questions about interlocks in Oregon

How long do you have to have an interlock in Oregon?

It depends on the offense. After a first conviction the requirement lasts 1 year past the end of your suspension or revocation, after a second or later conviction it lasts 2 years, and for serious crimes it lasts 5 years. Diversion has a minimum of 1 year.17

Who qualifies for help paying for an interlock in Oregon?

Oregon residents qualify when an Oregon court ordered the interlock after a DUII and they are enrolled in SNAP. The Indigent Ignition Interlock Device Program is run by the Oregon Health Authority together with the OSP IID Oversight Program.8

How do you apply for Oregon's indigent interlock program?

No application is required. You schedule with LifeSafer at 800-698-8046 and show proof that you are enrolled in SNAP. Because the program covers installation, monitoring and removal for people who qualify, this is the step to take before you book with any other vendor.9

How do you get an interlock removed in Oregon?

Finish your requirement, wait for the DMV to confirm it is lifted, and then schedule removal with your interlock company. A No Negative Report or Certificate, based on a log review that normally covers the last 90 days, ends the requirement. Early removal exists only for diversion drivers.11

What happens if you fail a test on an Oregon interlock?

The vehicle will not start if it detects alcohol above 0.020, and that reading counts as a violation. Failed or missed retests count too, as do tampering and circumvention. The DMV is notified and your original requirement is extended.12

Can you drive a work vehicle without an interlock in Oregon?

You may drive an employer-owned vehicle in the course of your employment without a device if your employer has been notified and you have proof. The exception covers driving that is part of your job, so it should be confirmed with the DMV for your situation.15
